Toy Story 3: The Toys Are Back In Town

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

.

And now Moms and Dads, the moment you’ve all be waiting for- or at least hounded about via your anxious children…

.This Friday, Toy Story 3 {Finally} comes out!

.

I don’t know about you,  but I feel like I’ve been waiting for the release of this child-favorite for Months… no, years!

.

For us, Toy Story fever hit full force when we went to Disney back in March- we rode the various Toy Story rides over- and- over. I couldn’t help but want to buy every Toy Story Toy in the souvenir shops- and if I found it hard to resist- imagine what it was like for my 5 year old?

.

Ever since then a phrase that has become quite common around this house is “We’r going to see that- right?… does it come out today?” To which we sadly had to reply,  ”No, not yet. SOON!”

.

SOON… The word plastered all over the trailers, posters and now the response of Mom & Dad… for sure my son’s definition of the word “soon” is just a tad bit jaded.

.

But  who could blame us all for this kind of anticipation? …. Who doesn’t love Toy Story?

.

And from what we’ve heard through the grapevine, you can expect to see even more NEW truly lovable- can’t-say-no-to toys to be released along with this movie! Good thing we’ve organized the playroom!

.

Who’s excited with me? …. Who are your favorite characters?

-Corine

The Big Toy Book Mom talks Silly Bandz in the Times!

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

.Every generation has its trends. In mine it was the plastic pacifier (a la TLC).

This generation of tweens and teens are going crazy over Silly Bandz, Zany Bandz and Crazy Bandz. These Bandz are rubber bracelets that are shaped like everything from animals to instruments and are are selling out in toy stores all over the tri-state area.

.

Jackie Breyer, a Big Toy Book Mom and Editor In Chief of our sister publication The Toy Book , talked about this new hot trend in The New York Times this past Friday- Click here to check it out

.

If your teen is going ga-ga for this trend, you can find Crazy, Zany & Silly Bandz on The Big Toy Book store. We have over 25 different variety packs to choose from!

Collectible Toys- for show or for play?

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

.

When I was a child, my mother started a Barbie collection for me.  Swan Lake Barbie, Holiday Barbie, Nutcracker Barbie- I have them all still in their box, just as picture perfect as the day I received them.

I can remember in my late teenage years, I would often tell my Mom how silly I thought the collection was. All of these beautiful Barbies- never touched or played with- and never will be.

Years later, I now have a better appreciation for the collection my mother started for me years ago for sentimental reasons- though when I look at the dolls in their boxes I still think “she should have let me play with these”.

Because of this, now as I  look forward to starting my own daughter with a doll collection, I find myself being drawn to the plush dolls she can play with, like those in Madame Alexander’s “Play Alexander” line. These still may not be something I would want an 18 month old teething on, but when she is older and able to care of them better I believe she will love playing with them.

There is however already one play-friendly collection I have started with my children at a very young age.

I’m talking about….

… Mr. Potato Head.

I am not sure when this collection started,  could have been a birthday or Christmas but over the years we have collected many different types of Potato Heads since you can find them for just about every occasion, holiday and profession- there are even Spud Bud Pets!

It seems there are many other Potato Head fans out there too- because this Easter, Spud-Bunny was impossible to find in local stores and the week before Easter these cute little bunny toys were only  available on line !

My kids love their Potato Heads. It encourages them to use their imagination and they love mixing up the characters facial features and accessories to make silly faces.

This fall Think Way Toys is introducing a Toy Story Mr. Potato Head that will allow for traditional play but will also have the animated functions as well (and yes, it even comes with a set of “angry eyes”!) This is sure to be a hot item come this holiday season that I am sure will be on my kids lists.

When it comes to our Mr. Potato Head collection, I am not sure they will stay as perfect as they were when they first arrived- but some toy collections aren’t meant to stay perfect. Sometimes worn in toys equal well loved toys and for us- that is what Mr. Potato Head is- well loved.

Do you collect any particular toy for your child? Do you let them play with it or do you keep it in the box for value in years to come?

Play on the Go

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

.

.

“What toys can Mom’s keep on hand for sun and simple play-on-the-go?”

-Rachel, www.QuirkyMomma.com
.
It almost doesn’t matter how old your kids are..keeping them occupied is always a good thing.  My teens of course, are usually pretty happy with (what else) texting…but when I put the right toy in front of them, they are still intrigued- But let me back up from teens and let’s take a look at “play on the go” for smaller kids.
.

First, some tips!

.

-Keep it separate from what they are allowed to play with at home. Make it special…this is only for the long car ride…or the short supermarket run.  This way, they’ll anticipate the “on the go” play bag and won’t get bored.
.

-Keep it compact and light! We all have enough to make our shoulders ache, so keep it small and keep the carrying weight to a minimum..

.

-Don’t forget the Cheerios (with that great portable carrying case!) and the drink. Healthy snacks and something to quench their thirst will always be part of the grand scheme of happy children.

As for toys specifically, here are some new items that you can consider:

.
For the wee-little ones:
(6months +)
.
Crayola Jumbles- This item is a first building set from their Beginnings Baby line. What I really like is that you can take just 3 or 4 of these and drop them into the diaper bag.  They are made for baby hands…your baby will try to chew (don’t worry…non toxic) and it will only take a few for baby to be very occupied.  Pretty colors, great for small motor skills….  Ages 6 months and up!

.
For the pre-schooler:
(ages 4+)
.
Crayola Dry Erase travel Pack- This includes reusable activity sheets which kids put under that attached clear surface where they can write and color..when they are done, they can erase and try again.  Everything they need is included, 4 washable dry-erase crayons, 8 activity sheets, the dry-erase Case, an Erase Mitt, and a Crayon Sharpener…for ages 4+ (wait till you see just how compact this is)
.
(I will be covering the pre-school age more in depth on Rachel’s upcoming Toy Guide… be sure to stay tuned!)
.

For the school kids:
(ages 6+)
.
Hasbro Sorry Revenge is one of my favorites and it’s the perfect game to play with your kids and can be played in about 15 minutes (think…waiting for food at a restaurant).
.
Of course, at the restaurant- the quarter on the table works too. We still play that game and who needs a reminder of the rules for that one??… … …or did my Dad just make that up when we were little?
...
Mighty Beanz are back from Spinmaster! Remember them? So many Mighty Beanz to collect and so many games to play.  This is an easy one to travel with and also to pull out new ones when you’re on the road.
.
And last but not least is an old favorite with a new twist (literally)
.
The new Rubiks slide from Techno Source… From 8 to 108, this game is fun and can be played alone or everyone can try to beat the timer.  The new technology is great (solving the puzzle by moving lights with a twist or a push) and best of all this game is inexpensive, light and compact.  All my requirements for a great “play on the go” toy.
.
.
These are just a few suggestions. There are so many great items to choose from.  Toy manufacturers have offered lots of simple and inexpensive choices because of today’s economic times but also- don’t ever underestimate a good old deck of cards.  From magic tricks to building houses to playing a simple card game….a deck of cards will always go a long way.
.
Enjoy and have fun with your children.
.
