PRIVATE SALE ALERT- K’NEX SESAME STREET SETS- 40% off!

If you were to visit our house, you would without a doubt hear “EMMO” being chanted by my {almost} 2 yr old, over and over- along with the occasional “cooo-kieee”, in her raspiest voice. I’m not sure when this all started, but it is certain- much like her parents in the 80’s, this child loves her Sesame Street.

So if your little one is as Elmo-obsessed as mine, then this next private sale is for you…. and me too! ;)

Beginning today, The Big Toy Book’s online private sale store will feature deals up to 40% off Sesame Street playsets by K’nex!

The K’nex Sesame Street Neighborhood collection allows your child to build the neighborhood they know and love the most- Sesame Street. They can build their favorite characters as well as buildings and cars. The building blocks in these sets are chunky and made especially for little hands.

Soaking Up Summer Time Fun On The Streets Of NYC

Today our Toy Insider Mom, Laurie Schacht did a segment on Good Day New York highlighting some of the great new toys out this summer.

My son and daughter got to demonstrate the toys- they had a blast!

My son road the Whiplash Scooter & simultaneously fell in love with LOTSO BEAR (from Toy Story). My daughter, whos new obsession with Elmo was all about the Elmo Rid On Toy and The Adorable Dora Bubble blower… and well ALL of the kids could not get enough of the Sand and Water Table!

Yes, all was fun in toy land. So fun, that the “big kids” couldn’t resist getting in on the action.

Their toys of choice though? The Air Hog Plane, The Monster Truck… and The Super Soakers! … Oh, the Super Soakers… and well- you take a look for your self-

Can you guess who did not win that water fight?  ha ha

Laurie got caught in the line of fire, but she didn’t mind because it was so hysterically funny.  The whole segment was just fun- plain and simple… and does that really come as s surprise when we are talking about some of the coolest toys this summer?

Not. at. all.

Online Private Sale Alert! Cloud B up to 55% off

.

Look at this little guy! Doesn’t he just call to you “Snuggle with me”?

.

All of Cloud B’s plush make the best snuggle friends. And with Cloud B’s exclusive aromatherapy lavender blend tucked inside each (that is easy to remove for washing), children sleep more soundly with these cuddly pals by their side.

.

For years, Lavendar’s calming scent has been recommended to sooth babies to help mom’s put their little one’s down for bed time as well as nap time.  With this in mind, Cloud B added an entire line  of aromatherapy plush pillows! Could it get any more perfect?

.

Neither of my children were born good sleepers. My oldest has fussed his way to sleep from the day he was born and still does 5 years later. My youngest, though now an excellent sleeper went through a period of being colic!  So believe me, I have tried every sleep recommendation out there- warm milk, walks in the fresh air, rides in the car-  but the one thing I have always used to help settle them down for sleep time was the scent of lavender.  For parents of cranky babies, Lavendar can be a life saver  because it truly is calming (for both baby and Mom  ;) .

.

The aromatherapy pillows are offered in a wide variety of animals too! From, Sleep Sheep to Lady Bugs, Giraffes, Pups &  Turtles there is a perfect pillow pal for every little one- and they are just the perfect size to take on the go for those long car rides!

They make an especially great gift for new moms and are perfect holiday gifts for infants and toddlers.

Today through July 17th, The Big Toy Book’s Online Private Sale Store have great deals on both the aromatherapy pillows and plush animals from Cloud B- with savings up to 55% off!

Happy Shopping!

What sets Citiblocs apart from other block sets is that they are made from Radiata Pine from certified renewable forests in New Zealand, making these sets great Eco-friendly, green toys!

.

The other great thing about these block sets is the endless possibilities it provides kid, ages 3 and up, for imaginative play activities. With the Citiblocs pieces, which are all cut to be the same size and offered in various colors,  kids can build a simple bridge for toy cars or a intricate city of towers!

.

I’ve always found that it is the simple and classic toys that offer the most imaginative, creative play that get the most play time with my kids. Sure, all those cool bells and whistle toys are fun too- but when a child can really grow a toy with his/her own imagination- its always a favorite.

.

Tell Us Your Own Toy Story & Win a Toy Story 3 Play Table!

.

We did indeed go to see Toy Story 3 this weekend and just as expected, we loved it.

When we got home, my son started collecting his toys around the house that resembled the toys in the movie. To my surprise, we had most of them! Not the licensed Toy Story toys (though of course we have those too), but the classic toys. The chatty phone, the big baby, a stuffed bear, a piggy bank… it became a scavenger hunt. .

The picture in this post is only a partial picture of the Toy Story we were able to create in our house… Mr Potato Head & Mr. Prickle Pants were camera shy.

We had so much fun with our scavenger hunt, we thought it would be fun to see what Toy Story you can create in your house and turn it into a super fun contest!!

Here is how it will work:

Tell us your toy story

Print out our Toy Story 3 scavenger hunt list.

Find as many characters you can in your house . They don’t have to be the licensed toys- just toys that are similar.

Think outside of the {toy}Box – ie.) Any Cowboy can be your child’s Sheriff Woody

Set up your own Toy Story scene and/or let your child play with the toys to tell your Toy Story

Take a picture of of the scene or of your child playing with the toys

Post to our Facebook wall

Encourage your friends and family to “like” your Toy Story picture

1 Entry per family. Contest will run from Jun 22 through Jul 15th

Winner will be contacted Thursday Jul 15st prior to our Private Sale Twitter Party! 9pm ET (#Thebigtoybook)

The entry with most likes will win this really cool Toy Story Play Table by Delta Kids Furniture.

Toy Story 3: The Toys Are Back In Town

.

And now Moms and Dads, the moment you’ve all be waiting for- or at least hounded about via your anxious children…

.This Friday, Toy Story 3 {Finally} comes out!

.

I don’t know about you,  but I feel like I’ve been waiting for the release of this child-favorite for Months… no, years!

.

For us, Toy Story fever hit full force when we went to Disney back in March- we rode the various Toy Story rides over- and- over. I couldn’t help but want to buy every Toy Story Toy in the souvenir shops- and if I found it hard to resist- imagine what it was like for my 5 year old?

.

Ever since then a phrase that has become quite common around this house is “We’r going to see that- right?… does it come out today?” To which we sadly had to reply,  ”No, not yet. SOON!”

.

SOON… The word plastered all over the trailers, posters and now the response of Mom & Dad… for sure my son’s definition of the word “soon” is just a tad bit jaded.

.

But  who could blame us all for this kind of anticipation? …. Who doesn’t love Toy Story?

.

And from what we’ve heard through the grapevine, you can expect to see even more NEW truly lovable- can’t-say-no-to toys to be released along with this movie! Good thing we’ve organized the playroom!

.

Who’s excited with me? …. Who are your favorite characters?

-Corine

Organizing THE PLAYROOM.. You Can Do It!

.

GUEST POST By: Sandy Jenney of Organize with Sandy

Sorting in a Playroom

Would you like your playroom to look this organized and fun? More than likely it will take some work. Here are a few tips that might help you.
Step 1 -

Get those black and white trash bags. Black for trash – White for Donate

Step 2 -

Make those decisions quick. Do not sit and remember each birthday party or Christmas that each toy came from. Remembering the fun, who gave it to them. Feeling guilty if you give it up. That is “personalizing” the toy. You can take a picture of it…if it is something you want to remember.
Step 3 -

Look at each toy or book. Ask yourself these questions:

1) Does it work? (broken? – trash)

2) Do they like and and play with it? (If not – donate)

3) Have they out grown it? (donate)

4) Does it have all the pieces and parts? (If not – trash)

5) Is it broken? (Trash)

6) Is it worth taking up space in the playroom? (If not – donate)

Step 4 -

Decide if YOU are the reason they have too many toys. Are YOU the one that doesn’t want to give up the toys? Many times WE are the problem, not the kids. We remembering picking out that toy and how excited we were to give it to them. We know how much it cost and know that it was expensive.

BUT…..if they do not use it any longer, if it is broken ….it is time to give it up.

Toy Storage

So now that you have your toys sorted (well hopefully) you need to know where and how to put them.

My Guidelines and thoughts are Simple

I like a shelf rather than a toy box. Toys get lost in toy boxes. Kids don’t want to dig down to the bottom. Pieces fall down into that dark hole of toy misfitness and are never seen again.
Be sure if you use a shelf that you anchor it to the wall. Kids like to climb on things, especially if they see something up top that they want and can’t reach. You want to always be sure that shelf can not fall over on them.

Be sure to put the toys at age appropriate levels. Put the toys where the young children can find them. Put the older toys and games with small pieces up higher so the younger ones can’t choke on small things. This toy shelf I bought years ago when my boys were young. It had been a coat rack in a daycare. See the smaller cubbies on the right. That was their top cubby when it was turned on its side and their coats hung in the other longer part. I probably bought this about 25 years ago (wow that makes me feel old…I still remember how excited I was to find it…and it was cheap!)

I am all for the clear baskets or like these….where you can see what is in them. They don’t all have to match or be stylish (depending on where your playroom is). These are from the dollar store.

This one we use for the marbles. Yes…that is a big sock..filled with marbles. Don’t ask me why we keep them in a sock. I just know that my Dad put mine in a sock years ago and these are still the marbles I used to have….(yes in a newer sock)….but it works.

Think outside the box. I had to figure out some way to hang these guitars for guitar hero. I had this hook already and it fit perfect….solution.
We made a bedroom in the basement for one of our older boys (his choice). The kids used to use the “under the stairs” space for a fort. But since that was now made into his closet…we had to block the other side. This was our solution.
Several bulletin boards did the trick. It blocked off the opening and provided a great place for the kids to display their art work.I am all about practicality.

Make it work….think outside the box.

Teen Insider: Music Connects All

.

Music is a gift. The right kind of music, not lyrics of “blah blah blah” but a song on the piano, a voice lifting through the air, the whistle of the wind. Its the gift we get, the gift we feel when we listen to music.

.

Its weird to say that music keeps people together, and sometimes the lyrics of a song  or how to play a musical instrument are the only things that some people remember.  So why is it that if a budget were to fail or something has to be cut from school, music would be the first option?

.

Just the other day I was at my friends house and we walked down the street to his grandparents house where their family eats dinner every night. Just like my grandpa,  his grandfather has Alzheimers. I have been over several times, last night being one of them. When I walked in my friend asked him if he remembered me, he said of course, then asked my name when his grandson walked away. I told him it like it was the first time we met.  We sat at the table talking while his grandpa hummed along with contributing in the conversation. My friend got up, grabbed a harmonica and handed it to his grandfather, his grandfather picked it up and played as if it were nothing. His grandfather forgets he had dinner twice already, but he plays this harmonica just as he would blink his eye, or breathe for that matter.

.

Every Sunday I do volunteer work in a town right by me; it is like a camp from 9 to 12 for children with special needs. I work with kids with autism, there are two kids in particular, they are very difficult and don’t really like to listen, but they do react to music. They dance and will stop when they hear a song. Music class, my favorite class to go in with them, on good days, they sit and interact by singing the songs and playing the instruments. They rarely remember my name as a seven year old, but they remember the words to songs. Every week the teacher goes over a few of the same songs and hell stop at a word and wait for them to fill in the blank; the music gets them to stop, and really think. When they get to bang the drums they sing, its astonishing how much music impacts them and gets a child who has trouble connecting, to really pay attention.

.

It inspiring  how important music is, how much of an impact it leaves on anyone. Not just an elderly with Alzheimers, or a child with autism, but sitting in the car you can hear a 2 year old singing to a song that comes on the radio, or shows up from Barney on TV. The nursery rhymes that are read to them every night, or just a tune they can walk around humming. The way music moves a person, getting them to feel like a part of something, emotionally by the words or by the sound.

.

Its when  a song comes on the radio and makes you smile, or how a person can walk into a room, and Broadway show and not know a word to a song and have the beat stuck in their head. A rhythm sticks, a song sticks, a math problem or a Chem definition don’t  stick; a drummer sits down not even realizing that their hands are moving slightly as they keep the beat, what beat? The beat that sticks in their head because of the way a piece of music has influenced them.

.

Not everyone is a painter, a writer, a doctor, or a mathematician, but everyone has music. You may not be the best dancer, instrumentalist, or vocalist, but in some way music moves you, it reminds you of something- an important time in your life, it reminds you of someone, or it just makes you smile, and sometimes even cry. No one realizes how important music is until the radio turns off.

Toys of Today vs Toys of Yesterday… What will the Future bring?

.

Toys of Yesterday

.

Wouldn’t it be great to start out old and grow younger as we age? How do we compare the toys of yesterday to those of today? It is a matter of generational thinking, as well as the needs and wants of children. Not so long ago toys were simple, well built and served a purpose—then you would put them away. What we can learn from the toys of the past is play patterns and how to “learn as we play,” and to take that combination into the future. We all remember our favorite Barbie, Hot Wheels car, and board game to this day. The history of toys is made up of all sorts of contrasts and lies somewhere between the needs of the child, the interest of the historian, the desire of the collector, and last but not least, the involvement of the adult in his childhood, the magic world from which he can not bear to be excluded forever by the mere act of growing up. I know this all too well being a Dad of a 4 year old and a 2 year old.

.

Toys of Today

.

The toys of today are changing. The economy, technology and the internet, as well as people’s lives, have a great influence over toys. As a working Dad, I know this every day. Technology, the internet and today’s fast paced lifestyles has given us the need for more sophisticated toys that really challenge our kids’ imaginations, skills and knowledge. Toys have become more than just a fun thing to pass the time, but a way to learn, grow and experience life with a good, creative, fun, affordable and reliable toy. In the past, a toy would take up to two years to take to market. Now, toys are conceived, designed, manufactured and distributed within six months.

.

Today’s toys have changed in many ways such as safety, style, play value, manufacturing, retail distribution, cost, as well as brand awareness. The toy companies think like kids, adults, and educators. Toys of the present will soon be toys of the past. What kids can learn from the toys of today is to “learn as they play” and to take that combination into the future with them.

.

I often observe children playing in schoolyards, playgrounds and classrooms, and spend time at toy stores, take trips to museums, art galleries, hobby shows, antique shops and libraries. My children find that skills are learned and creativity is experienced. The toys of the present day rely on all sorts of play patterns from fantasy, language, motor-skills, thinking, perceiving and creating.

.

Combing the past, present and future of toys with the needs and wants of children is key. Since infancy, my children have played with many different toys. They are an essential form of education for them. My children have separate needs and wants, they want to learn how to solve problems on their own, and need to. The nature of toys is compounded with pleasure, fantasy and imitation. Toys are a “starter kit for life” and learning to face what is ahead of them in life. Ask yourself What, When, Where, Who, Why and How children play with toys. Who chooses the toys your children play with? Is it genetic, philosophical, psychological or the past, present and future aspects that chooses the toy? Creativity in play is a form of intelligence for children.

.

Toys of the Future

.

The future of toys is pressing towards the combination of the past, present and future with generational thinking, philosophy and psychology. Basically all the aspects of life to teach a child what they will need later on. The technology of toys is increasing, as well as the needs and demands of the world. The character of a toy with its functions and mechanics gives the utmost variety to creativity, as well as the imagination of the child. It will teach children to be themselves and to unlock their own special ways of uniqueness, to teach them ways of manipulation and production of a theater of life, to show them options and possible solutions to problems. Are the toys of the past of actuality? Are the toys of the present of fantasy, and will the toys of the future be both? We will soon see.

.

Here are ten features of a “Good Toy” that have stayed with us over the years.

Weight Loss Journey’s Can Change When Family Motivates

.

GUEST POST By: Katie Heine of My Life As A Navy Wife

.

I wasn’t always obese. Yes, I will admit this is what my Wii Fit tells me I am when I weigh myself.

In 2006 I was at my highest weight- 230 pounds and between a size 20 and 22. I wasn’t happy. I was convinced in order to get a man I needed to lose weight so I joined weight watchers in early 2007.

Shortly after joining Weight Watchers, I met my husband who he accepted me for who I was. Being in the Navy, my husband watches his weight since he has to follow certain regulations and his healthy habits (well some of them lol) have also helped me. I slowly started to lose a few pounds here and there after we got married due to the changes we made with our eating habits, but I still was obese.

When we got pregnant the first time, I lost the baby- it was a horrible experience for us. I then started to have several other medical problems manifest, and in late 2008, with a family history of diabetes- my weight issues began to get serious.

.

My weight loss journey was a slow process starting out because I had no idea where to start. I was never a big fan of working out. I wasn’t a runner; I could barely jog and never could run well when I was younger. And with food, well it was (and still is) a love hate relationship. I am an emotional eater. I use food to cope when I’m anxious, depressed and even excited!

.

So I joined Spark People, a site that I had looked into once before but never truly used it. This time Spark People was different for me. I used it to complete in challenges, learn about tracking food, and finding other resources.  I also entered a contest and won sessions with a personal trainer who helped me immensely. She helped me focus on the goal that I had, which was to have a baby and be healthier. My trainer kept me in line with my eating habits by looking over my food journal and I learned how to do workouts at home, outside and at the gym. Before I knew it 20 pounds were gone.

.

When I was finally at a weight that I hadn’t been 7 years- a miracle happened. I became pregnant. I was planning on keeping with some type of fitness program, but was terrified that something would go wrong with my pregnancy, so I stopped. I was lucky that I only gained 26 pounds with my pregnancy and we welcomed our first son into the world in October 2009. Shortly after, I lost all the baby weight  but I still had weightloss goals.

.

This time I had to try and fit weight loss and fitness into my life with a young infant that required all my attention and a husband that was often working away from home.  I turned to the tools I had right in my home- Wii Fit, workout videos, and our Gazelle (an elliptical like machine).  In addition to SparkPeople, I found a wonderful Sistahood in Mamavation. Mamavation a social media program that uses Twitter, blogging, and other social media outlets to help moms support moms. There are so many amazing women with amazing stories. The group provides daily encouragement and prompts to get your workout in and drink your water and if I have a bad week, I  blog about it and receive amazing support from these gals who are going through the same things that I am.

.

My motivation for my weight loss goals have changed from when I first started this journey. Yes, I’d love to look better, but more importantly I want to be able to play with my son, run with my husband, conceive another child, and be able to live a healthier and fuller life without medical problems.

.

Right now my mission is to lose 30 before I turn 30. I have until August, if I don’t  meet it, that is ok, but if I do it will be wonderful. The most important tips I can offer to other Mom’s looking to start a weight loss journey of their own is to make sure you have great support & set clear goals. And when you reach those goals (and you will!) be sure to reward yourself!

Connecting with Moms Online and Entering Our Comfort Zone

I cry.
.
I’m one of those moms that every time I go see something that the kids are in,something that they did, I have to wear the big sunglasses because- I cry!
.
When my first was growing up, I cried the most- she took her first steps, I cried. We took her to her first Broadway show, I cried (there was nothing like seeing it through her eyes.), graduations- cried.
.

My two oldest marched down main street with their band in Disney world… forget about it- those tears were only surpassed by the ones that followed when they performed on stage at Disney the next day

.
And my kids? they laugh every time they see me with those glasses because they know I’m crying… and I will always say “it’s just allergy’s”- but they know.
.
When my oldest, Jordana, was in her senior year of high school there were numerous times she would walk into the kitchen and see that I just finished crying, because I knew that my time with her living under my roof was coming to an end. I knew she would still come home (she does) and call (she does)… but I also knew it wouldn’t be the same.   And now when I think about Brit (a junior in high school and your very own Teen Insider) and the fact that we are beginning to look at schools for her….well, I’m already crying.
..
Funny thing is that this blog post was not supposed to be about this, but as I sat down and as last Friday’s twitter giveaway is still with me because it was awesome! I realize that I am making friends, connections on this site and so sharing things like this is becoming natural for me.

.
While our Friday giveaways are about toys and prizes I am also finding that it is becoming a true give and take about not only toys but parenting, our kids and about being moms.
.
We have some very exciting things going on in the world of toys and play here at The Big Toy Book which we will be talking about in length- but right now I wanted to talk about us, about moms, and about the moments that stay with us (even if we cry) as we watch proudly while our children grow up before our eyes and become independent.
.
As moms, when we find places to connect (here, I hope for all of you), we have a place to share exciting things in our lives, a place to look for advice, and a place that is comfortable.
.
Although I’ve lost most of my “me” time lately, I used to do a lot of yoga.  There was a time, after  years of practicing that I went into downward dog- a simple pose that I had done what seemed like forever and it actually it felt right, comfortable.  There was my zone.  So the few times that I make “me time”, no matter the challenge in the pose, downward dog is my comfort zone, where I can relax and breathe.
.
And for me, BigToyBook.com is starting to get that same comfort feeling- and I am loving every minute of it. .  What began as two moms in forefront has now turned into a team of the fab five! What began as a weekly chat to win toys, has turned into talking about the kids, their schools, their behavior, and making new friends, and perhaps most importantly, What began as a destination to shop, is turning into a destination to connect.

.

From Bloggers to Teachers, Moms and Eco-friendly brands, the internet is buzzing with tips on how to “Go Green” and celebrate Earth Day’s Big 4-0.

.

Over the past week we’ve found some really great suggestions, tips and crafts from some of our favorite bloggers and thought we’d share a few:

* Secrets of a Super Mommy- quite a few posts featuring some really unique crafts using recycled material.

* Mommy Perks- Great post featuring 20 Earth Day Tips on everything from getting rid of bugs to cloth diapering.

* NuggleMama’s Handful- Participating in an Earth Day Challenge this blogger talks about the simple changes she’s made in her every day efforts to become more green.

* Mommy Niri- Talking about children’s television shows teaching about Earth Day.

* Mommy Poppins- Lists some great Earth Day activities going on in NYC. Even if you are not in NYC, it can give you some ideas to look into in your area.

.

Because we believe teaching kids from a young age about caring for the environment and living green can plant the seeds for an eco-conscious adult-

We here at The Big Toy Book were so excited to celebrate fun-filled Eco-friendly play,  we began our celebration last week .

.

When it comes to “playing green” price is often a concern. However we’ve noticed that as the green trend is growing, more and more manufacturers are finding ways to reduce those once hefty price tags.

Citiblocs manufactures great wooden alternatives to plastic building blocks. Their sets come in various sizes which makes them affordable just about any budget!

Sprig is a popular brand that manufactures its affordable green toys from “Sprig Wood,” which is a combination of wood and recycled plastic. Their Dolphin Explorer Boat won Specialty Toy of The Year at Toy Fair this year.

Sprig- Dolphin Adventure Boat $20.12

Sprig- Dolphin Adventure Boat $20.12

Recently, Sprig Toys joined the Wham-o Family and are busy reinventing some of those classic & favorite toys such as Frisbees and Hula Hoop from Sprigwood in an effort to go green.

Other companies, such as DuneCraft and Insect Lore are great brands that promote teaching children green living through their hands on with nature kits.

Curious Georges Outrageous Farm

DuneCraft - Curious George's Outrageous Farm $24.99

InsectLore- Butterfly Gardens $14.95

InsectLore- Butterfly Gardens $14.95

In addition to the above mentioned green toys, The Big Toy Book has an Eco-friendly toy page that is filled with many toys & brands that inspire green living every day.

This Friday we will be continuing our Earth Day celebration during our TGIF Chat and Giveaway.

.

During our TGIF Giveaway, we will be talking  some more about ways to teach our children green living through play as well as giving participants the chance to win all 3 items pictured in this post!

.

So how do you play? … Its Easy Peasy!

Building Language Skills in Children with Disabilities Through Play

.

GUEST POST By: Dr. Carrie Wells of Abi’s Place

.

Close your eyes and imagine your favorite childhood memory. Were you playing chase outside with your closest friends? Playing house with your sister? Building an imaginary fort with your brother? Was it family board game night? Through play, typically-developing children acquire the skills necessary to communicate with others, physically manipulate a variety of items of all sizes, build strength and endurance, express and understand emotions, and gain understanding of their world. As children, play motivates us to get good grades in school, do all of our chores, and even eat brussel sprouts!

Now imagine as a child, due to a disability, you were unable to develop the skills necessary to play with others. While typically-developing children may naturally make a baby doll drink from a bottle or build a house out of blocks, children with disabilities often reject toys by pushing them away, play with them inappropriately, or ignore them altogether. The skills needed to enjoy play must be taught by a trusting adult through activities that are motivating and engaging.

Play can be used to teach basic to complex language skills to children with disabilities. Some of these skills include:

.

  • Following simple directions to play with a toy (e.g. “Put the horse in the stable”).

..

  • Following complex directions (e.g. Let’s brush the doll’s hair and then put on her beautiful dress.)

.

  • Identifying items to play with (e.g. “Find the blue fish”).

.

  • Requesting preferred play toys (e.g. “What do you want?” “I want the tractor toy”).
  • Teaching the sounds necessary for children to independently produce words used to play (e.g. “The cat says â€meow’.” The car goes â€vroom’.”).

.

  • Modeling appropriate turn-taking skills (e.g. “First it is my turn. Then it is your turn”).
  • Answering questions (e.g. “Where do we put the letter?” “In the mailbox!”)

.

  • Playing pretend (e.g. “Who do you want to be?” “I want to be the king.”  “What does a king wear?” “I can use this blanket as my robe and a pot as my crown.” “Great idea!”)

.
It is through these types of social exchanges that appropriate language usage is modeled in a relaxed, natural, and nurturing learning environment. In order for the play activities to be engaging, you must first identify what toys the child likes. Try presenting the child with a variety of toys to identify the child’s level of play. Some different categories would be:

.

  • Cause & effect toys: Toys that light up, make sounds, spin, etc. when triggered by touch. These are the simplest toys because they are easily activated and meet a child’s basic sensory needs. You can promote language usage by asking the child to follow simple directions, such as “Touch the big button” or “Look at the lights.”

.

  • Toys that have a clear beginning/end: These would be puzzles, shape sorters, Mr. Potato Head, and ring stackers.  You can promote language usage by asking the child to differentiate between items “Where do we put the cow puzzle piece?” or “Show me the yellow circle.”

.

  • Toys that can be used to teach daily life skills: These would include baby dolls with accessories, doctor’s kits, and kitchen sets with play food. You can promote language usage by asking the child to perform basic skills “How do you feed the baby?” or “Can you please take my temperature?”

.

  • Representational pretend play toys: Once children are able to understand more concrete toys, they can then expand their ideas creatively and abstractly. You can promote language usage by helping the child to build a fort out of blocks, play house and reverse the roles (the mommy pretends to be a child while the child pretends to be a mommy), or going “apple-picking”  in your backyard by filling a wagon with lots of balls then “cooking”  some applesauce with them in a big “bucket” pot. At this point, you are only limited by your imagination.

.

  • Complex dramatization toys: This is where children can use toys to represent more complex social situations. These would include playing with Barbies and other fashion dolls, action figures, and Transformers. Girls will want to create scenarios about going to the school dance, while boys would rather fight an intergalactic battle. Still, you are able to work on language skills by encouraging ongoing, topic-related social exchanges.
.

.

Regardless of a child’s abilities, you want play to be fun, stimulating, and nurturing. It should never feel like work. Play should stimulate language development by fostering creativity and building a strong child-caregiver bond.

.

The Teen Insider- Guest Speakers Inspire

I’ve never had an inspiration before, well until today that is. Every year my high school holds a wellness day where we have guest speakers come in and talk to us about activities that may influence our lives, many from the perspective of those who have had their lives changed. Our guest speakers talk about many thing: drinking, drugs, gay/lesbian, disabilities, illnesses, nutrition, sex, cancer, holocaust, and many more. As a junior, this is my third time experiencing this day, the good part about it- new speakers every year.

So when we recently had such an assembly, I didn’t know what to expect walking in, I just figured a usual “don’t drink and drive” type of man, but then my teacher announced that he models and just that was a shock to me, who could they possibly be bringing in?

Onto stage walked a man, a very very cute man in all honesty, he got up there and the first thing I noticed were the crutches. Then I saw his missing leg. The only thing I could think about, was how did this happen? While the people around me were shocked or gasped, I watched him walk around the stage just as anyone else, and I watched him smile just as well as anyone else could do, and I didn’t pay attention to what was missing.

His name is Josh Sundquist and at a young age he had to get his leg amputated because of cancer. He is now seen with just one leg (and sometimes his prosthetic leg) and two crutches which help him throughout his daily activities. Yes josh probably looked down on himself when this first began, he probably wished that of all things that could happen to him- for this to not be one of them, however; he got onto the stage they set up in the gym for him and he smiled. He smiled!

For two 41 minute periods straight, Josh told jokes, he told stories about him having one leg, he even sang a song at the end, but; he always smiled. Josh lives a normal life even with a missing piece, he knows what’s missing, and he once knew what it was like to have it, he also knows what its like to have something so essential to life, not there anymore. Therefore, josh has learned more then any 80 year old who is healthy and still married; he learned importance. He learned life, and he learned that there is much more to it then sitting around and sulking. Josh taught me a lot while he talked, he found the benefits in having one leg and he doesn’t hide the fact that something isn’t there. Josh is very open, and expresses himself, trying to help people, especially teens who might be embarrassed about something, that this one thing should never hold you back.

Out of my three years in high school and hearing other speakers from middle school, had to have been my favorite. I have never heard someone so inspiring, and through the conditions he’s been in, so happy!

This day I realized through all the troubles anyone can go through, big or small, it is important to always look ahead because sitting around feeling bad for yourself won’t get you anywhere, and if you give up on yourself eventually the people around you will too.

Josh taught me.  Josh inspired me.

There are always people who will walk into your life, they may just be there for a moment and after many years you might forget their name or what they look like, but things they have said to you will stick like glue. Josh’s words will stick to me, his smile will let me know that there are always going to be obstacles but your the only one who can truly make yourself feel better about them, josh has learned this. Now its about time his words, his ideas, his wisdom, begins spreading; so anyone who has a problem can learn too- can learn for him and maybe even be inspired by him, just as I am.

If you want to check out Josh’s website http://www.joshsundquist.com/

Quick & Easy Snacking Can Be Healthy Too!

.

GUEST POST By: Lisa of Frugal Family Fun

.

Moms everywhere are constantly thinking about the health of their kids. I know for me it is a daily worry- especially when my kids- like most, would choose a french fry over veggies any day. Most important thing to remember as a parent is this is NORMAL! It can take 10 times before a child likes a new food.  The key is to keep offering the snacks and to try to make it enjoyable!

.
Fighting over food will get you no where.  We’ve all heard the “I don’t like it”excuse when a child doesn’t want to eat what is on there plate. I have heard it so often, I felt like my kids weren’t getting the proper nutrients they needed.  So I started “sneaking” veggies into their diet.  Here are a few of my favorite tips to get the kids to eat and maybe even love veggies-
.

1. Offer veggies with ranch.  Tried and true.  Offer a variety and see what they like and keep offering it!!  Also offer things even if you don’t like, because that thing may be your child’s favorite.

.

2. Offer veggie drinks like V8 Splash, that have a serving of veggies in every serving!  I have also found Fruitables from Apple and Eve, which are convenient fruit/veggie juice boxes!

.

.3. Look for canned pasta that say “one serving of vegetables inside”(such as ravioli, spaghetti rings, etc.), these are usually the kinds of things kids will eat.  It is important to find the one that says there are veggies inside, because the others are not as healthy.

.

4. Make burgers with ground up veggies. We made some with green and red bell peppers, onions and garlic. We just cut them up, put them into a mini hand food processor until it was really chopped, then
mixed by hand into the meat.  After making patties we cooked them and they were a HUGE hit!!  There was easily 1 if not 2 servings of veggies in those burgers!  (this is my favorite tip!!)

.

5. Check out some healthy snack recipe books – such as  The Sneaky Chef for fabulously yummy treats with lots of veggies! Another great recipe book is  “Food For Tots” by Dr.Janice Woolley, Pediatrician, and Jennifer Pugmire, Mom. There are many recipes you can find in Food For Tots like: Breakfast Burritos, English Muffin Pizza and Homemade Mac and Cheese.

.

Here is a quick and easy one for you to try:

.
Orange Banana Milk
.
What you will need:
1 2/3 cups milk
1/3 cup frozen orange juice concentrate
1/2 of a medium banana

It’s an Eco-Friendly Play Celebration!

.

Earth Day is just 10 days away and we want to celebrate!

Starting today through April 22nd (Earth Day), we will be talking about the benefits of Eco-Friendliness as it applies to all things play.

So what changes and trends have we noticed in the toy industry over the past few years?

Promotion

May retailers that once had print catalogs are now putting more resources in promoting their products online in an effort to not only follow the shopping trends, but to conserve paper usage.

Packaging

Steering away from the once standard, Styrofoam packing many toy manufacturers are using recycled paper and cardboard when packaging and sending their products.

Toys

Many manufacturers are introducing toy lines that are more eco-friendly. Materials like organic cotton, soy based inks and rubber wood are being used in lieu plastics and and chemically treated materials.

Organic toys are not only more environmentally friendly but they are healthier for children to play with… Especially when your child is teething and chewing on every toy she can get her hands on.

It is typically believed that Organic Toys are attached to a hefty price tag- however as our Toy Trend Expert, Reyne Rice points out in her latest edition of “Reyne Talks Toys” on Toyinfo.org – that is not always the case in 2010.

Not only can Eco-friendly toys be affordable but there are some truly adorable ones out there this year as well  and we look forward to highlighting some of our favorites for you over the next 10 days via our blog, twitter (using hashtag #TBTBEarthDay) and our Facebook page.

Join us in our 10 day Earth Day Celebration!

In addition to our chatter and answering some questions you may have about Eco-friendly toys- We will also be giving you the chance to win some of the same great toys we will be talking about during our next 2  TGIF Giveaways on Twitter (Fridays, 2pm ET)- So be sure to stay tuned!

In the mean time, we’d love to know your thoughts on Eco-friendly toys.

Do you purchase them?

Do you have any favorites- or ones you’d love to know more about?

Collectible Toys- for show or for play?

.

When I was a child, my mother started a Barbie collection for me.  Swan Lake Barbie, Holiday Barbie, Nutcracker Barbie- I have them all still in their box, just as picture perfect as the day I received them.

I can remember in my late teenage years, I would often tell my Mom how silly I thought the collection was. All of these beautiful Barbies- never touched or played with- and never will be.

Years later, I now have a better appreciation for the collection my mother started for me years ago for sentimental reasons- though when I look at the dolls in their boxes I still think “she should have let me play with these”.

Because of this, now as I  look forward to starting my own daughter with a doll collection, I find myself being drawn to the plush dolls she can play with, like those in Madame Alexander’s “Play Alexander” line. These still may not be something I would want an 18 month old teething on, but when she is older and able to care of them better I believe she will love playing with them.

There is however already one play-friendly collection I have started with my children at a very young age.

I’m talking about….

… Mr. Potato Head.

I am not sure when this collection started,  could have been a birthday or Christmas but over the years we have collected many different types of Potato Heads since you can find them for just about every occasion, holiday and profession- there are even Spud Bud Pets!

It seems there are many other Potato Head fans out there too- because this Easter, Spud-Bunny was impossible to find in local stores and the week before Easter these cute little bunny toys were only  available on line !

My kids love their Potato Heads. It encourages them to use their imagination and they love mixing up the characters facial features and accessories to make silly faces.

This fall Think Way Toys is introducing a Toy Story Mr. Potato Head that will allow for traditional play but will also have the animated functions as well (and yes, it even comes with a set of “angry eyes”!) This is sure to be a hot item come this holiday season that I am sure will be on my kids lists.

When it comes to our Mr. Potato Head collection, I am not sure they will stay as perfect as they were when they first arrived- but some toy collections aren’t meant to stay perfect. Sometimes worn in toys equal well loved toys and for us- that is what Mr. Potato Head is- well loved.

Do you collect any particular toy for your child? Do you let them play with it or do you keep it in the box for value in years to come?

Sharing 5th birthday wishes on Facebook

.

It seems like just yesterday, my baby looked like this:

But sadly, it was not just yesterday. It was years ago– 5 to be exact! I know 5 doesn’t sound very old to many, but to me- it is. I’m still figuring this parenting thing out and my little man goes and turns 5 on me? Who gave him permission to do that? Certainly not I.

Every year when Ryan’s birthday rolls around I am bombarded with questions of “what does he want?” …  “What is he into?”. Sounds like easy enough questions- but they always catch me off guard- even now- … FIVE … (gulp)  …years later.

The beauty about this year though is that I was able to tell my friends and family- who are all on facebook (sometimes for better or for worse- with their Farmville addictions) to check out my facebook stream… all of my sons wishes were posted right there from The Big Toy Book.

So for instance–

As soon as I posted the toys, people who saw it would comment on them “calling” their gift so that no one else made the same purchase (a la my son’s 4th birthday when we wound up with 3 Ben 10 Omnitrix’s) It became a game of “I saw it first” amongst our family. It was also great because even if they didn’t get to “call” the toys we wished for- it gave them a sense of “what he is into these days”… and most of all it took the pressure off of me having to come up with gift ideas on the spot.

The Wish button can be found on the bottom of all products on The Big Toy Book. Check it out when you have a chance- its a lot of fun- and slightly addictive  to play around with.

If you’re looking for ideas for a 5 year old super hero like mine- here are some other toys he wished for from The Big Toy Book-

The Teen Insider on Being The Middle Child

.
Know what drives me crazy?
.
Every time I walk into the room and its dark (or my mom doesn’t have her contacts in) she asks, “Erika?”
Me:...  “No its Brittany”.
.
Every time my parents call the house and I answer (which I do over any of my sisters) and they say “Erika?… Jordana?”
Me:“No. … Brittany”
.
EVEN when I call my parents I get, “Erika?” … When obviously there’s caller ID because I’d hope they’d have me in their phone.
Me: ..(Sigh)… “Brittany.”
.
I am a middle child,  sandwiched between an older sister in college who tells my mom EVERYTHING, every-little-piece-of-her-life (one reason I don’t tell her anything), and my younger sister who is still “the baby” of the family… which means although she has the biggest attitude in the family, she’s still spoiled because she’s the youngest, the last child, the only “baby” left of the family. Then we have me…… the middle child. I’m not given an identity, I’m the child that’s forgotten about.
..
So where does this leave me? I’m just the junior in high school who is beginning to look at colleges. How does that make me special in anyway? How am I suppose to stand out in my family when I’m just the child thrown in the middle?
.
Living as the creme in the middle of the cookie sandwich, I always need to find a way to not be called Jordana, Erika or even my dog, Martini (yes my dog is named Martini, I know) And it takes one person to make me stand out- me.
.
If you were to ask my mom who would be the best child to babysit, hands down she’d tell you Brittany. She’d say, although the older one will bring cookies to make, Brittany is the most responsible.
.
Jordana has better grades then me- I work harder. Erika gets away with a lot (even with an attitude)- I’m the most reasonable and down to earth.
.
You see through years of wanting to be unique, I’ve learned who I am; and though many people (myself included), would say they will be like their parents when they grow up, I also want to find ways to be different.
,.
This past summer I went miniature golfing with a friend, it began to rain and the people in front of us were going slowly. My friend became agitated, while I just stood there, not minding the slowness of everyone else- I told him to be patient. He looked at me with a bit of shock and asked why I am so patient, I told him my parents are very impatient and I don’t like it, so I make sure I am patient with everything – its tones everything down, and, I promise,  it doesn’t add on stress to wait.

.

I’ve also noticed how everyone likes to talk about themselves. I’ll admit I used to be one of those people. Then I took a minute and started listening to what everyone was saying, and this is what I heard; ” I this- I that- I want- I need – I cant- I heard - I did – I,I, I, I,… !!!“. So now, I hold back my “I” in a conversation with people.
.
I’m more down to earth then a lot of teenagers in my town and I’m definitely more mature.
.
And although none of this may  change my being called Erika when I answer the phone at home, I’m confident that other people will see all that makes me stand out- because I am unique!… Even if I am the middle child.
.

A note from the Toy Insider Mom
It’s not easy to read (and post) a blog like this from my daughter and not address it.  However, the deal is that she is here to answer questions and talk about her life of feelings as a teen. That is the deal, and I must respect it.
.
For those of you with teenagers, you understand how special those small windows of insight into their world are… we don’t get them often (for those with younger children, you’ll get it soon enough).
.
The Nickelodeon Parent Connect Mantra “We’re not perfect, we’re parents” never rang more true to me. It is important for us as parents (of kids of all ages) to realize that Parenting -every step of the way- is about listening and learning because every child is unique- no matter the birth order. It is something that we as parents recognize from the moment they are born.
.
* And for the record, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I (and her dad) adore that never forgotten about middle child and what she means to us. I hope she reads this note at the end of her blog!

Spring Toys & Easter Baskets – Twitter Party Recap

.

Wow! What a great time we had at The Big Toy Book Spring Twitter Party last night! In the true Big Toy Book style, we pre-partied with many of you from Noon til 5  and even went into an after party (so many toys, so little time! ). In addition to our  many fabulous prize packs won, we had great participation and lots of ideas shared for both spring play and Easter baskets.

It is always nice to see our regulars, as well being able to welcome some new friends too!  These twitter parties happen so quickly that we thought it would be great to go over some of the new and fun items that we gave away.  -Some of our lucky winners are receiving toys that have not even hit store shelves yet!!
.
Since we’ve all been talking to much about games lately, let’s begin there.
.
Bubble Talk, by Techno Source (*not on shelves yet, but we have a few more for our Friday giveaways.)
This is a great game that I’ve already mentioned my family loves (and remember, I have teens that are very picky).   It’s an easy game to play. You simply place a photo in the middle for players (or teams) to use the “Thought bubble” cards they’ve been dealt to find the funniest caption the photo. Once everyone has submitted their caption, the judge of the round picks the best one (new judge every round).  The player/team that makes the most “funnies” wins!! (Our own teen insider is quite good at this game).
.
Guesstimation by Discovery Bay Games
This is another new favorite! I was never good at trivia and would hide when a trivia game came out to play…but no more!  In Guesstimation, the closest guess wins! So we all have a chance to win- everyone can guess! A question will be asked, for example:  “How many pizza’s are made each day in NYC”. Everyone then puts in their guess and even if you’re off by millions- if you are the closest you will win the round.  It’s a lot of fun and as with all games, the appeal is that every time you play a game…it’s different.  The other appeal is that games are priced well!
.
The Wave G2 by Street Surfing
Spring is in the air and when the rain subsides, pull out that bikes, scooters and especially the Wave G2!  The Wave is an inline action board. It’s a combination of surfing  and skating and it’s an awesome ride.  My kids are great, I’m better on their Whiplash (I need to hold on).
.
Crayola, Crayola, Crayola
It’s a name we all grew up with, and continue to find new reasons to love it today. At our Pre-Party, we gave away Jumble Blocks. These are great chunky blocks for little hands.  They come in packs of 12 and 20 and are ideal for keeping little hands busy and active while on the go- so be sure to keep 3 or 4 (various colors) in your diaper bag at all times!
Crayola Dry Erase Travel Kit (*not yet on shelves)
We talked about this product a few weeks ago and so we just had to give one away.  This is a product I wouldn’t leave home without, it is perfect for keeping in the car so it’s “special” for traveling, making your look forward to those long rides (or at least keep them busy for them!).
.
Spira-Chalk Blaster by Crayola
More great outdoor fun by Crayola. You put the chalk in the spinner, attach to the launcher, give a twist and create beautiful colorful designs on the sidewalk.  I tested this one out on 5th ave in front of my office – 5th avenue sidewalks have never looked so pretty
.
Speaking of toys I’ve played with on 5th avenue,
.
Optrix 3D Butterfly Dip and Blow Bubble Set from Imperial Toy
This toy was included in one of the baskets we gave away at the Party. It’s truly the best and is perfect for both spring and Easter baskets. Here’s the scoop-
Like many bubble sets, you put bubbles in the tray and use a wand— but, unlike other bubble sets–Ready for this?
You put on special glasses and can watch (in the sunlight) how your magic bubbles create butterflies.  You had to see the crowd on 5th watching me blow bubbles… kind of funny!

.

Disney Fairies Tiny Tink & Friends Pop-Up Tea Kettle Playset by Playmates

What little girl doesn’t love Disney Fairies?  This is the only small doll mini playset where girls can bring the magic of Disney to life through a beautiful Tea Kettle playset.

. .

Ugly Dolls

What party would be complete without these lovable, adorable, ugly guys? Certainly not a Big Toy Book Party! I have one in my office, my teenage girls beds are lined with them (still) and my 8yr old niece has a full collection too. Even the President’s daughter is a fan- and who can blame all of us? They are so ugly but so cute! They come in various sizes and are popularly collected by school kids on their backpacks.

.

Rubiks Touch Cube, by Techno Source

This was our final Grand Prize… and what a prize it is! It has what I refer to as the “i” touch technology and is really cool for all ages. Best of all, never again will you be left twisting the cube, and never finding the solution.   Play it alone, challenge yourself with friends, but most of all- as with all of the toys we talk about- Have fun!!

.

All items we talked about at the party are available to purchase on The Big Toy Book Store, where you can also view a complete list of our spring toy suggestions.

We look forward to seeing you at our  TGIF Friday giveaways at 2pm (et) every week as well as staying in touch all week long, and helping make you toy purchasing experience easy and enjoyable at your favorite destination, The Big Toy Book!

Happy Spring!

-Laurie

Did you hear? Vikings took over Times Square!

.

True Story!

Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images North America

Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images North America

On my way into the office today, I made a stop in Times Square and found it overrun by Vikings!

This could sound a little scary- but they were all smiling, taking pictures and generally enjoying the fact that their 40 ft Viking Boat was grounded in the heart of NYC (Being a native New Yorker, I have to say it was grounded in the heart of America).

The celebration being held was for Dream Works’ new movieHow To Train Your Dragon

I could not help myself- I took a few pictures with these cheerful warriors and then listened to actress America Ferrera (Ugly Betty and the voice of Astrid) talk a little about the movie and its exclusive toy partnership with Walmart, both which launch across the country this Friday!

While there are a lot of great movies that come out every year, not all translate into merchandise (specifically toys) very well.

So how does America’s giant retailer decide when and how much muscle to put behind a new movie launch/property?

After having the pleasure of spending a few moments with Walmart’s SVP and General Manager of Entertainment, Gary Severson- I began to understand a little more what sets some movies apart from the rest when it comes to toy merchandising.

Children are going to undoubtedly love this movie and the story it tells about Hiccup, a Viking teenager who just doesn’t fit in and the dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to look at the world differently.

Compound this sure-fire movie appeal with the years that Dragons have been a popular play pattern in the toy world (especially with boys) – it was clear to both Walmart and the first toy partner—Spin Master— that this had great potential to be something big.

Available exclusively at Walmart,  there will be a vast array of toys starting Friday- such as foam helmets and swords (of course!), snacks, apparel, and other products to keep the story alive.

We will also see the DVDs later in the year so be ready to add it to your holiday list! (Yes, its March– and I said Holiday!)

Now the real question is which item(s) will be on your little Viking Warrior’s list?

Family Game Nights are a Win/Win for Everyone!

.

GUEST POST By: Sara of All In An Iowa Moms Day

.

Sara's boys playing Monopoly. Picture was taken at Glacier Basin Campground in Rocky Mountain National Park. We even have family game nights while on vacation.

Monopoly, Clue, Yahtzee, Chutes & Ladders, and even Boggle! These are just a few of the games that come to my mind when I hear the words, “Let’s have a family game night!”  The ages of your kiddos will probably determine if CandyLand or Monopoly is pulled out of the closet. There are so many fun, family games out on the market today, that there is no excuse for you and your family to not be playing any of them.

.

One of the most popular excuses people make is, “We don’t have time!” Well, let’s see…. How many hours do your kiddos sit and play video games or watch television? Just by looking at that amount of time, you probably have time to play two or three board games! In the grand scheme of family time~ board games do not take that much time. By giving your kids some attention and showing them that you do care how they spend there time, your kids will thank you! Maybe not today, but when they are 20!

.

.

Our boys were playing Monopoly by the age of 4! Yep, that is correct. Hubby is a Monopoly junkie~ our boys have grew up playing Monopoly and love it to this day. When we travel, we often buy the version of the local area we are in.

.

When you take the time to be involved with your kids, explore new ideas with them, they thrive on the attention. Digging out one of those board games that is maybe tucked away in the back of your closet is one sure way to get your family back together!

.

So, now that you have decided to have a family game night, make the night extra fun! Maybe enjoy some milkshakes or an ice cream treat, something you don’t normally indulge in. Just a fun way to reconnect with your kids and add some extra fun to the evening. Board games not only encourage our kids to use their brains, but it also teaches them how to win and lose. Being a good sport is an important skill in life! And the most important reason to schedule a Family Game Night in your home~ it brings your family together! The time that you can give your kids, is invaluable! What are you waiting for? Schedule a Family Game Night at your home!  Your kids will be excited and thank you!

The Teen Insider… decoding the world of teens

.

When it comes to Teens, they aren’t always eager to open up to Mom (I know mine aren’t). So what’s a parent to do when they want so badly to be able to understand and relate to their teen?  Well the truth is, if you’re looking for advice about a teenager… the best thing to do is to …  ask a teenager.

I’ve asked my middle daughter, Brittany to become part of this blog by talking about some issues weighing on parents minds regarding their teens and also responding to parents who may want to annonymously submit questions to her as the “Teen Insider”.

I didn’t give her much direction except to become involved, read through some of my blogs and write down some thoughts. Her first blog is below.  I think she’s off to a great start!!

-Laurie, The Toy Insider Mom

Meet our official Teen Insider- Brit

.

Usually it’s the adult who doesn’t understand how to work these social networking pages, but as I attempt to begin my first blog- I am quickly realizing that I am the one trying to learn and understand, while my moms’ running with several pages and blogs.

As a teenager, we grow and we learn about the new technology. And the older we get, the more it improves. Our parents didn’t have what we have now, the computers, the phones, the networking device to keep in touch with friends from all over the world. But now ask, is this good or bad for us?

Before texting, every conversation was was face to face; however now every conversation, from catching up with an old friend, to breaking up with a boyfriend is through text.  As a teenager, I ask, are our communication skills being hampered? Do we have the ability to have a conversation that is face to face and actually shows emotion?  As we grow older, and our technology improves, are our conversation skills decreasing from overuse of staring at a screen?

We live in a world that makes communication easy, that helps us keep and make new friends from all over the world, but sometimes I wonder if it will leave us lacking quite a bit in our everyday dilemmas- especially when we need to solve problems in the workforce. Will we fire (or find out we were fired) from a job by text? I hope we can figure out how to make technology more face to face friendly.

Play on the Go

.

.

“What toys can Mom’s keep on hand for sun and simple play-on-the-go?”

-Rachel, www.QuirkyMomma.com
.
It almost doesn’t matter how old your kids are..keeping them occupied is always a good thing.  My teens of course, are usually pretty happy with (what else) texting…but when I put the right toy in front of them, they are still intrigued- But let me back up from teens and let’s take a look at “play on the go” for smaller kids.
.

First, some tips!

.

-Keep it separate from what they are allowed to play with at home. Make it special…this is only for the long car ride…or the short supermarket run.  This way, they’ll anticipate the “on the go” play bag and won’t get bored.
.

-Keep it compact and light! We all have enough to make our shoulders ache, so keep it small and keep the carrying weight to a minimum..

.

-Don’t forget the Cheerios (with that great portable carrying case!) and the drink. Healthy snacks and something to quench their thirst will always be part of the grand scheme of happy children.

As for toys specifically, here are some new items that you can consider:

.
For the wee-little ones:
(6months +)
.
Crayola Jumbles- This item is a first building set from their Beginnings Baby line. What I really like is that you can take just 3 or 4 of these and drop them into the diaper bag.  They are made for baby hands…your baby will try to chew (don’t worry…non toxic) and it will only take a few for baby to be very occupied.  Pretty colors, great for small motor skills….  Ages 6 months and up!

.
For the pre-schooler:
(ages 4+)
.
Crayola Dry Erase travel Pack- This includes reusable activity sheets which kids put under that attached clear surface where they can write and color..when they are done, they can erase and try again.  Everything they need is included, 4 washable dry-erase crayons, 8 activity sheets, the dry-erase Case, an Erase Mitt, and a Crayon Sharpener…for ages 4+ (wait till you see just how compact this is)
.
(I will be covering the pre-school age more in depth on Rachel’s upcoming Toy Guide… be sure to stay tuned!)
.

For the school kids:
(ages 6+)
.
Hasbro Sorry Revenge is one of my favorites and it’s the perfect game to play with your kids and can be played in about 15 minutes (think…waiting for food at a restaurant).
.
Of course, at the restaurant- the quarter on the table works too. We still play that game and who needs a reminder of the rules for that one??… … …or did my Dad just make that up when we were little?
...
Mighty Beanz are back from Spinmaster! Remember them? So many Mighty Beanz to collect and so many games to play.  This is an easy one to travel with and also to pull out new ones when you’re on the road.
.
And last but not least is an old favorite with a new twist (literally)
.
The new Rubiks slide from Techno Source… From 8 to 108, this game is fun and can be played alone or everyone can try to beat the timer.  The new technology is great (solving the puzzle by moving lights with a twist or a push) and best of all this game is inexpensive, light and compact.  All my requirements for a great “play on the go” toy.
.
.
These are just a few suggestions. There are so many great items to choose from.  Toy manufacturers have offered lots of simple and inexpensive choices because of today’s economic times but also- don’t ever underestimate a good old deck of cards.  From magic tricks to building houses to playing a simple card game….a deck of cards will always go a long way.
.
Enjoy and have fun with your children.
.

But I’ve found it takes a special kind of blog to make you come back day after day, and a special kind of blogger to write posts that after a while make you feel like they are an old friend you’ve know personally for years.
.
.
For me, one of those bloggers- is Scary Mommy, who in “real life” is known better as Jill and actually isn’t very scary at all.
.
I met Jill in person for the first time last year at Blogher. She was trying to figure out her transition to Wordpress and I was avoiding Wordpress at all costs. Since then so much has changed.
.
For Jill, she has not only mastered Wordpress (though I know she’s going to disagree), but recently made the leap from personal blogger- to brand blogger when she joined the Nickelodeon Family as Parent Connect’s Community Manager.

.
If you aren’t familiar with Nickelodeon’s Parents Connect you should definitely visit the site and check it out. It is a great community for parents to discuss everything from potty training to preschool.
.
One of the issues we all face as parents is seeking & perfecting that balance in our day.  Is there such a thing as balance and perfection? I have my doubts. but, I thought who better to lend some insight, than Jill?
.
So I set up a fun Q&A with her to discuss parenting, toys and to see just how she juggles being a rock star mom and a rock star blogger.
.

.

When and why did you decide to start blogging?

I started blogging when my youngest was born. I was desperate for a creative outlet and wanted to keep a sort of baby book for my three kids. I had no idea what opportunities would arise from blogging– I was simply looking for a way to make the days go by a little faster.
.

You have turned your hobby of blogging into a career over the past year, most recently landing a position as community manager with Nickelodeon’s popular “Parent’s Connect” site.

What were some things/ moments that you feel changed your outlook and goals  from hobby blogger to professional blogger?

.
The sheer amount of time I spent on it. I felt like blogging had turned into pretty much a full time job that didn’t pay. Being able to stay connected with my bloggy pals and be involved with the social media I have come to love AND get paid? It’s pretty much a dream come true!
.
What do you believe is the secret of balancing career and family?
.

think the secret is to separate the two. Have clear boundaries and work at work time and play at play time. Do I do that? No. I struggle every single day. It’s the hardest part about working!

.

What do you love most about working with Nickelodeon’s Parent Connect?

.

I love Parents Connect’s tagline: We’re not perfect… We’re parents. The people who work there all echo that sentiment, and family always comes first. It’s a fun, upbeat company and I find myself more positive because of work– that’s a pretty amazing thing!

.
The other day, we saw you tweeted “A person soon learns how little he knows when a child begins to ask questions. — Richard L. Evans” .. what are some crazy questions you’re kids have stumped you on?
.
The tough questions always get me: What happens when we die? Why isn’t there magic? Will you take care of me forever? My middle son says “why” more than anything. It’s totally exhausting!
.
As a mom of 3, you are no stranger to the toy world, what toys have you and your kids found that you love? and which drive you crazy?
.
Anything that makes noise drives me crazy– we have enough of that already! I tend to just let batteries die and never replace them. We all love puzzles and Play-Doh– they entertain my kids for hours!
.
We recently launched a new feature on our site, called Wish.it.  It allows you to share your child’s toy wishes with your friends on Facebook by clicking a button at the bottom of the product page.
.
If you’re child could wish for just 1 item each on The Big Toy Book, what would they be?
.

My daughter would flip for the Camille Ballerina– she’s been asking for a ballerina doll for a while and that’s the cutest I’ve seen. My middle is Lego obsessed and the Power Miners Titanium Command Rig would make his eyes pop out of his head! My youngest is easy to please and loves nothing more than baths. I think the Ship Squirter would make his day.

All Families are not Created Equal and Neither are Toys

.

GUEST POST By: Taneesha of Diva Moms NYC

Today, mothers are staying home and raising children in addition to running businesses. Some moms are choosing to not be married at all and raise a family. The possible combination of family make-ups are mind boggling no two are alike.

.

I recently interviewed The Gonzalez Cruz, a family that is made up of 2 moms and 4 children all of which have Special Needs.

At first glimpse this family may seem like an oddity when you are looking for the typical 2 parent household.

.

The parents are 2 moms devoted to taking care of  4 kids- 3 who are adopted and may otherwise not have been taken care of.  Their household is a busy one. In addition to the children, there are also 5 loveable Shit’Zus who greet you as soon as you make your entrance into their home.

.

With 4 children as you can imagine there are tons of toys and gadgets around the house. I asked Mom Vanessa, which ones get the most play time and if she had any suggestions to toy companies out there who may be considering creating a toy based on her kids needs.

Her biological son Justin (14 years) and her oldest daughter, Joy (16 year) though they have their special needs, are very much the typical teen in many aspects.  Justin loves video games and all things Pokémon. Joy- you can never get off the phone!

.

However when it comes to Ethan “Ya-Ya”( 9 years old) and Maya (1 year old) who both suffer for severe disabilities of their own (Ethan- autisim & mental retardation and Maya with severe medical issues) Vanessa said she has had most success with V-Tech toys.

.

Vanessa said with Ethan “Ya-Ya”, it’s hard to get toys for him because his attention span is so short. Ethan suffers from severe Autism and Mental Retardation. Vanessa said she finds even though some toys are suggested for children with Autism it’s usually limited to mild forms or Aspergers Syndrome. Since there aren’t any toys currently on the market that target his special need, she usually buys him 6-9 month old toys.

Maya, the baby of the house is one and has severe health issues but is just as active as any 1 year old. Vanessa said for Maya she has many VTech toys. She feels Vtech is the far better choice for mentally stable children. “The toys are great, I am a big VTech fan (because) they have incorporated so much learning into their toys”

As for suggestions, she says she wishes that companies like Vtech would make larger versions of their successful interactive baby toys which would be perfect for children that are like Ethan who need an equal balance of Sound, Lights and Interactivity. She even suggested the concept of making a larger for version of the Entertainment Play Center that they have for babies. She says Ethan is constantly fascinated by the one they have for Maya but he is too big to sit in it.

These children were born with a disadvantage and although they are not “normal” by society’s standards they are in a house filled with Love, Warmth, Affection and Attention and most importantly structure which are all the qualities required for being a Normal Parent.

Leap Frog Tag Junior- Is 16 Months really too young?

.

Is there an issue with giving my 16 month old a Leap Frog Tag Junior? He loves books, but didn’t know if there was any reason not to give it to him, as it is recommended for 2 years +.

-Twitter Follower, Abby Winters

There are two key reasons that manufacturers of all toys list an age, first and foremost is safety.  On this particular item, I don’t believe that’s much of an issue (we always worry about small parts and choking for any child under 3….and sharp or pointy edges for all children…but that is not really relevant with the Tag Junior).

The second reason they age a product is because a young child can get very frustrated with an item that is too difficult or complicated.
.
There’s an enormous difference in growth, physically and mentally from 16 months to 24 months.  For this reason, I do think that your child will enjoy this much more in a few months.
.
That being said, Leap Frog’s Tag Junior is a sensational item that will enforce your child’s love of books and I highly recommend it for the age intended. It could make a great gift for your little one’s 2nd Birthday! :)

From Mismatched Tots to Teens with Sweet 16’s -Where does the time go?

.
Sometimes when I am traveling through the blogosphere, whether it be on twitter, blogs or forums- I begin to miss the days my children were in “The Sweet Spot” for the cool toys being introduced.
.
You see, working in the toy industry, the Moms that I speak to in the blogosphere most- have young children. So even though, I am a Mom- I’m often reminded that I am not the Mom of babies any more… and sometimes, it makes me feel OLD.
.
I have lots of nieces that are still in that age group, my sisters girls are 8 and 5 (yes, we’re a family of ALL girls) who  I love playing with. My 3 (yes, 3) teenage girls however -are out of the “sweet spot” -though they still help me and the team with our toy evaluations because even as teens- kids are as  honest as it comes.
.
That being said, beyond toys-  My journey through the stages of parenting has left me with so much insight that I love to share with the “newer” Mom’s – because let me tell you… there’s nothing like teenagers!
.
When you watch your 3 and 4 year olds asserting their independence by insisting on picking out their own clothes,  your biggest issue is deciding whether or not it’s worth the fight when nothing they have on matches… but just wait til’ you see what teens can piece together!
.
Sometimes I bite my tongue and other times I say “ask your dad if he likes it” because typically- he is tougher on this issue than I am.  Then again, there a was a dress code violation a few months ago with my middle daughter- who had went dress shopping without me for a Sweet 16 she had been invited to.
.
The night of the party she waltzed down the steps about 3 minutes before her ride was coming to pick her up.  I took one look and sent her right back upstairs.  She didn’t pout, she didn’t cry, she didn’t say boo.  She came back down, dressed much more appropriately, handed me the dress in question… without question…..because she already knew.  I didn’t even have to raise my voice on this one.
.
When did my role as Fashion Police-Mom transition from approving mismatched outfits to approving what they believe to be “cool trendy” dresses?
.
This is the same child who at 3, used to come back from anywhere…so dirty!!  She had a little song she would sing to me that went simply “I’m a dirty kid and I don’t care”.  We still sing it to her to this day!

And while she is a bit older than in this photo and her appearance and wardrobe choices may have changed….there is still so many things that have remained the same. :) When we bake together, most of the flour still ends up all over her just like in this picture. My little girl, even as a teenager- still loves any chance she gets to be messy. And just today I had to leave work early, as this same daughter of mine was still calling for Mom when she didn’t feel good at school. …Of course, today the school nurse isn’t the first to alert me, now I receive text messages (and yes, probably from class), but the need is still the same. She is still my baby.
.
So babies by age, or babies in our hearts (always), there are still doctors to run to, tears to wipe,  hugs that feel even better when they are older (because they are not as generous with them as they were when they were  little & mismatching clothes), and important opinions being formed on burning hot topics… like  who is better- Buzz Lightyear or Mr Potato Head…  I’ll keep you posted as my family and I tackle this tough one! ;)

Latex allergies can make toy buying tough. Bandai puts one Mom’s concerns at ease.

GUEST POST By: Barb of Elementary Spirits

No Latex Here!

No Latex Here!

Being a mom has its challenges. Being the mom of a special needs child, though, brings challenges to a whole new level. That is why when you find an individual or a company that goes above and beyond to make your life a little easier you want to tell the world about it.

My son is allergic to latex. Latex is essentially natural rubber. It is a very common component of many items and sadly, until a few years ago it was found in almost every type of toy. It is in rubber balloons so places like Chuck E. Cheese are hard to manage let alone telling him all the cheap rubber toys all the other kids have is just not OK for him.

Through the years I have called many, many companies asking if their products contained latex but I have never had a company go to the extent that Bandai did to make sure for me. My son wanted a Ben 10 Omnitrix watch like all his friends had. I asked the other moms, most were sure it probably had latex. Through the years all my mom friends have gotten very good about detecting it.

I called Bandai expecting to be told it did but what I got was a very nice girl who told me that she wasn’t sure but she would find out. “Yeah, right” I thought. I let it go, told my son it was latex and thought that was it. A few days later Bandai showed up on my caller ID. I answered to find the young girl I had previously talked to profusely apologizing that it took so long but she had contacted the legal department  who then contacted the actual plant manager in China to make sure that no latex was used in the manufacturing process. I was speechless that she and her colleagues had gone to so much work to answer my question.

We happily wheeled off to Target to get his watch and lots of other Ben 10 toys he had been eying and I became a loyal Bandai fan because as every mother of a special needs child knows it is the small little things that let our kids have the same experiences as their peers that really matter. Thanks to Bandai going that extra mile, Carter is able to beam his aliens with the best of them and thats all we really want.

Hot Toys For Preschool Boys

..

What are some hot new toys for preschool boys?

- Twitter Follower, Julie Davis from Finn & Tanner.
... ..
..
Preschool is such a fun age for play, isn’t it?
..

The Thomas line is a favorite among preschool boys and one of my favorites this year is a new line of Thomas and Friends by Mega Bloks. Thomas and Friends at the Quarry utilizes its box as part of the building, and I love the height and dimension that boys get to create with this line. The first of this new line will be available this spring (with plenty of additions in the fall!)

..
..

Tonka’s Chuck & Friends is another well loved character for preschool boys. This year, you can be on the look out for Tonka Chuck by Hasbro for your preschool boy. There’s a great new track set for him to do flips on and a new talking chuck as well! Preschoolers are going to love them!
..
..

..
...

Baby Genius has a full line of friends that sing and dance to both preschool boys and girls, with new DVD’s, flashlights with their favorite images lighting up the wall and even a singing broom.

.

..

..

...

..
..

When it comes to preschool games, Wildplanet’s Flipper Frenzy available this fall, which is something I highlighted on the CBS morning showCBS morning show during Toy Fair. They also have a Woody’s Roundup  game due out this spring that preschoolers are going to love. Both games call for running and listening fun- which mean your preschooler gets to burn off lots of that never-ending energy we all envy.

..
..
I hope that has given you some great ideas for you and your little boy!

Toy Fair: Generations of Love for Toys

The first thing one of my kids asked me today when I came home from my day at Toy Fair is “where is Mr Potato Head”?

You see, today children are not allowed into the show at Javits but when I was younger- things were different. The show took place at the “old” toy building on 23rd and 5th in Manhattan.  Each company had a showroom behind closed doors, and my dad was the publisher of a trade magazine called Toy and Hobby World. I attended every year.

My job during Toy Fair was to make sure that every showroom for this show (that lasted weeks -not days) had 2 copies of his leading magazine. Those magazines weighed a ton- but I didn’t care. Every showroom held a different surprise and I couldn’t wait to open each door and see it all.  Certain showrooms had 2 doors, and so when I went in to drop off our book- I only made it to the reception desk area where there were no new toys in sight- THAT, was heart breaking.

Each year my favorite showroom then was Gund. The way I remember it, You walked into this world of animals right up to the ceiling! It was amazing.

In the hallways of “The Toy Building” men in suites played catch with new hot sporting toys, tried out new bikes & even trampolines! I loved it. It was funny to watch, it was fun to be a part of.

Today, the show is much shorter- but the fun continues and grows each year. New games are being played, new skateboards are being taken for a spin, connections are being made, retailers are filling their shelves, and everyone is trying to invent the next “hottest” item for the season. It’s what continues to make Toy Fair fun!

Back when I was a child delivering books to showrooms-who knew that the pages I was delivering held the true secret to staying young at heart and that I would continue turning those pages into my adulthood.

I look forward to the day my kids can attend Toy Fair and discover the cool new Mr. Potato Head themselves first hand-  and I can only hope that the love of toys will continue to grow in my family, as it has for generations.

Talking Toys for Children on The Spectrum

Today we have the privilege to participate in a twitter discussion called The Coffee Klatch. The Coffee Klatch is a daily discussion that takes place on Twitter from 9a-11a every weekday for parents of children with special needs.

Today’s discussion with moderator, Tammy of QuirkyMomster is about toy suggestions for children on the spectrum. Since there are no toys that are specifically made for children with special needs, it can sometimes be challenging identifying which toys are best suited for them. I thought it might be helpful to list some of the suggestions we here at The Big Toy Book came up with.

To help younger children work on their social skills:

Building Blocks such as Mega Bloks & Lego

MegaBloks Play & Go Table

Tents & tunnels

Pacific Playtents

Pacific Playtents

Toys for Auditory and Cognitive Developement

When working on auditory and cognitive development, the key is to find a game that is a learning too that doesn’t make the child feel like they’re being given a task. Here are some games we discussed on The Coffee Klatch for this:

1-2-3 Stomp by Wildbrain ****(Stop by QuirkyMomster for a giveaway!)***

Wednedays with The Toy Insider Mom: The “Play with me” factor

Goldberger Toys

Gearing up for Toy Fair next week- we are beginning to see some really cool toys being announced this year.

When I look at toys the very first question I ask myself is- will this toy call out to a child…’“play with me”?  If the answer is no,  I keep walking.

When I was a child my sister had a favorite- Little Lost Baby (anyone remember her??). We couldn’t go anywhere without her. Once we were on the road for close to an hour- traveling to upstate NY- when we suddenly realized my sister had forgotten her baby doll! The panic! So my Dad did what any parent in such a predicament would do-  turned the car right around to go back and get her.

So what made Little Lost Baby so special?  She called to my sister “Play with me!” You see, Little Lost Baby was both versatile and snugly- it was in essence what I describe as, yummy! She had 3 or 4 different faces that changed by a mechanism in the back of her neck.  She would cry or laugh or coo…or of course sleep and with the exception of her face… the doll was soft and snuggable.  My sister slept with her every night.

When it comes to plush toys- a child should be able to hug it, to love it, and to sleep ON it…even if it does cool things . This year you will see new plush items hitting the market, like Animal Planet’s endangered species line.  These plush animals not only move and make sounds… they are a great learning tool for kids, making them aware of the animals that risk extinction…and the best part is– they’re soft! (Yummy!)

I have some favorite Toy Story toys that will be on shelves this holiday season. Some will call to your child for the yumminess and some will call to your child for the down right “coolness” -Like the new Toy Story Mr Potato Head- No matter how cool Mr. Potato Head is (and he is awesome), he is still the real deal that you can take apart, put together and change his expressions. Kids love that.

We saw some cool trucks calling to our little boys this past holiday season. They sang, danced and rolled to you when called like Tonka Chuck and Matchbox’s Rocky the Robot Truck -but the greatest part of these trucks? They can also be played with just like a regular truck, so if the batteries aren’t them, or a child wants to fill the truck up with dirt or toys- they can! These kinds of toys provides imaginative enjoyment for years.

Building sets have called “play with me” to children for years because it is like finding a brand new toy every time it comes out of the box. My kids used to love the playmobil circus set when they were younger.  The big top would take quite a while to rebuild each time..but each time the kids would use the set to tell a different story. That’s the beauty of blocks- your child can build a castle one day and a city the next- changing out the characters & making their experience different time after time.

This year as our children get more computer savvy, we will be seeing more and more toys where kids can actually create and download their own apps! Manufactures know that computers are calling to our children each day, so they are finding new and exciting ways to incorporate that appeal into their toys.

So whether your child is engaging because of technology, creativity, or simply cuddling- the bottom line when checking out all of the cool new toys, like those being announced next week at Toy Fair is to make sure that toy screams “PLAY WITH ME”.

If the answer is “yes!”- don’t let it pass you by!

Tips for Surviving Toy Fair 2010

It seems lately we here at The Big Toy Book are living and breathing all things Toy Fair! For us it is one of- if not the most exciting times of the year (followed up closely by the holidays of course!)

However as exciting as it is, it can also be quite overwhelming- especially for those attending for the first time.

I will be blogging live from the show Monday and Tuesday here on TBTB blog. Being a first time Toy Fair attendee myself, I thought it would be a great idea to put together a “Survival Guide” for newbies like myself. I posted some tips on my site, www.complicatedmama.com as well.

Enjoy!

Giving Parents A Choice & A Voice: Discovery Wonder Wall Projector Giveaway!

Whether you Facebook, Tweet, blog or participate in forums, in 2010 there is one thing we all have in common- and that is the love of connecting with others and having our voice heard.

Today we exchange advice, parenting struggles, shopping tips and sometimes just random thoughts as regularly as we eat our meals. And while all of these exchanges are done virtually (and sometimes in just 140 characters)- over time there is a very real trust and friendship that is built from it.

The Big Toy Book is similar in that the site gives parents and gift buyers a choice and a voice in the toy world, just as your favorite forums may give you a choice and a voice in the parenting world. It’s not just a website that provides you with toy information. It allows you to easily comparison shop, shop by specific need & it is a growing community that encourages members to share their product and shopping experiences with each other.

If you follow @thebigtoybook on Twitter, you are well aware that they love to connect with their community and offer chances to win some of the hottest toys available.

So, this being the week of their  official blog launch they wanted to do something BIG!

The Discovery Wonderwall Entertainment Projector – BIG!

Then come back here to the blog and let us know which toy you commented on.

It’s that easy!

Getting social in 2010

–We interrupt this snow storm to bring you news from

The Big Toy Book News Room–

The snow is falling here in the New York area with no end in sight. So before we head out to build some snow men and snow angels, we thought what better way to spend a snowy morning than to post our very first blog?

After all of the fun we had this past holiday season with our friends on Twitter- there was one thing we were sure of for the New Year- we wanted to get even more social! It seemed only natural to start our own blog here so that we can share and discuss not only insights on toys, but our day to day insights as parents.

We have teamed up once again with Complicated Mama, Corine Ingrassia to help us kick things off. Together we are planning for a year filled with: Friday scavenger hunt giveaways, Twitter parties, a new Facebook site, guest bloggers… who knows what else we have up our sleeve? ;)

Our very own Toy Insider Mom, Laurie Schacht will be offering great toy insights on toy trends & tips for parents here every Wednesday. If you have any questions for her or topics you’d like to see her discuss feel free to submit them to us here.

Ok, well our kids are anxiously awaiting with their mittens and hats on.

Now back to your regularly scheduled snow storm ….
